…reception-part two: the food…

The single most effective thing we have done in planning our wedding, both to cut cost and create a one-of-a-kind experience for our guests, has been to approach each decision with a mind open to unconventional ideas. The food we'll be serving is no exception. DG and I like food. Really good food. But we are not necessarily fancy, and neither are most of our guests.

We talked about keeping it simple for the sake of saving our pennies. We started with the idea of serving barbeque. It's usually a fairly economical option. One we know both our families would enjoy. That was maybe a little too straight forward for us. Wanting to keep the reception light-hearted, we began thinking about comfort foods. Possibly a macaroni and cheese bar? It was a nice idea, so DG started pulling his strings once again. The arena has in-house catering, and DG works with them on nearly every event he does, so he approached their director about what we were trying to accomplish within our budget. Somewhere along the line, he got some crazy idea in his head and decided he wanted to serve breakfast….for dinner. Like I said, thinking outside the box. It may have taken me a minute to digest the idea, but I was quickly sold. You must understand. I love breakfast. Like, LOVE, love it. I think DG would probably say the same. We could eat it for every meal of the day. And who didn't love it when their parents cooked them breakfast for dinner as a kid? Give me a pancake and some hot syrup and I am happy. Plus there is the added benefit that DG and I are avid coffee drinkers. We were planning on having a coffee bar/station situation on one end of the room, so breakfast just ties in perfectly.

For the record, I would never eat my breakfast this way. I can't have things touching like that.

DG met with the caterer without me to discuss our initial ideas, the cost, and number of guests. She was up to the challenge and agreed that she could do it within the budget we'd alloted. We will be scheduling a tasting soon so that we can finalize the menu (and I can't wait by the way!), but in the meantime, here's what we're thinking….
When guests first arrive after the ceremony, there will be scones, muffins, and fresh fruit awaiting them. Following the arrival of our bridal party, we'll open up a full breakfast buffet, to include scrambled eggs with various gourmet toppings, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, and either pancakes or waffles. Mmm! J

Then, of course, we'll serve the cake later in the evening, but that is a topic of its own. People may think we're a little nutty, but I guarantee you, everyone will be talking about how good the food was.
